* A day is comprised of a block of time (usually around 8-12 hours) in which the engineer and band can successfully come to a definitive stopping point during a session. The reason that The Tannery uses a day rate rather than an hourly rate is to keep the band focused on recording their music, not worrying about the clock. This can be an easy way for a band to take advantage of an engineer (in-house and freelance). We do not encourage 14 hour sessions. Not only will you and your engineer be physically performing and functioning poorly, but also your ears will not be working properly and hearing the mixes correctly. Ear fatigue can lead to poor decisions and poor mixes.

** The hourly rate listed on the site is for quick sessions that wouldn’t even near a day’s worth of work. For example, a mix-down session that might only take three hours or a session devoted to cowbell overdubs.

*** With the current state of affairs for analog recording, tape prices are hugely inflated. A reel of 2” tape can record either 15 or 30 minutes of music depending on its operational speed. Please contact us to see what is right for you. Used 2” tape is also an option. The downside to this is that it has limited availability, so we need to know well in advance if you are going to need used tape. Always contact us about tape, no matter what, before we start your project.

And lastly, please be prompt. When your session is scheduled to begin at 4:30 PM, please be here at 4:30 PM. When you are scheduled for a certain time, be there exactly at that time. The staff of the Tannery is usually not at the studio until the beginning of that day's session, so when we arrive at 4:25 PM, we expect you to be there at 4:30 PM. This is for everyone's benefit.

With this in mind, all clients must assume that their session clock starts running at the session start time, regardless of when the band arrives at the studio. We try our hardest to accomodate our clients' needs, but the main point is BE ON TIME! Ok, I'm done now.
